RE: 55-Cents per-gallon tax increase: Climate and Community Investment Act
Honorable State Legislators:
On behalf of numerous hard-working residents, I am writing to extend our overwhelming disapproval of your bold proposal to increase fuel taxes by 55-cents per gallon. New Yorkers pay an average of 14.1% of their income to state and local tax burdens, the highest of any state in the nation. To consider this increase during one of the most financially trying times in modern history is out-of-touch with reality.
In addition, New York is already one of the most expensive states to be a homeowner. This bill would increase taxes on heating oil, propane, and natural gas by 26%. If you examine your Bluebird accounts, you will find cases of families not being able to afford to heat their homes. To purposely increase those costs is a disservice to them and all that deserves a warm place to sleep.
Beephan states, "It is not the job of policy-makers to strong-arm progressive climate causes by artificially elevating the cost of fossil fuels. If they believe their plan is representative of their constituents, present the facts to the public and prepare to listen to the hard-working middle and lower-class families."
Thank you for your time and consideration.
